As runners who do yoga to support our running, we are unlikely to achieve stunning, super-yogi, pretzel positions with our strong sturdy runner bodies. It might look impressive when people can make amazing shapes, but we don’t need to do that, so don’t worry about it. Our muscles, proportions, bone shapes, joints, fascia are unique, so aiming to make a certain shape isn’t always helpful or possible.
Think function over form.
When you’re doing a class or video or just even just doing a few stretches, it’s useful to have these questions in mind: Where am I meant to feel this? Which muscles am I switching on for support and stability? Which muscles are lengthening? Do I feel stable or unsteady? How do I need to adjust to make this feel right for me?
A huge benefit of yoga for runners is the way it helps us understand our own bodies.
